Allergy & Asthma

Allergies afflict nearly 50 million adults and children and are the 6 th leading cause of chronic illness in the USA . Of the millions afflicted, 15 million suffer from hay fever and an estimated 10 million suffer from asthma. Most allergies tend to be a hereditary condition. Allergies occur when the immune system has an over reaction to a substance. Common allergens include pet dander, dust, mold, mites, feathers, foods, drugs and insect bites. The body's reaction to these allergens can vary from a simple runny nose or watering eyes to inflammation of the lungs and skin rashes.

It is estimated that over 22% of US Olympians suffer from chronic asthma. Past Olympians have brought attention to chronic asthma and allergies and show us all that you don't have to become a couch potato if you are inflicted with this type of illness. A few Olympians who live with chronic asthma include: Tom Dolan (Swimming), Tom Malchow (Swimming), Bryce Hunt (Swimming), J.P. Shilling (Speed Skating), Greg Louganis (Diving), Nancy Hogshead (Swimming), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Track & Field), Dennis Rodman (Basketball), Isaiah Thomas (Basketball), Dominique Wilkins (Basketball), Amy VanDyken (Swimming), Bill Koch (Cross-Country Skiing), Jim Ryun (Long Distance Running).
