The editors have composed a unique encyclopedia of topics related to the financial, accounting, managerial, taxation, and legal aspects of the business of medical practice. The topics extend to aspects of personal financial management as well. The purpose is to provide a general reference of value to medical practitioners to help them understand business aspects. Targeted to the medical practitioner and office manager, this book takes on a formidable task given the breadth of questions addressed, the diversity of medicine, and the heterogeneity of medical practice. In an attempt to provide comprehensive coverage of issues related to the practitioner, the encyclopedia covers both issues germane to the administration of a medical practice as well as issues relevant to the personal finances of the practitioner. The strength of this book lies in its breadth and readability. Of necessity, the depth of coverage will not be sufficient in many topics and the reader will want to pursue these topics in other references. It would have been useful if formal reference lists or suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter were provided. The rapid changes in the federal tax code and the federal regulation of Medicare and Medicaid have rendered some of the information somewhat obsolete just one year after publication. Hopefully, the editors will consider some form of supplement or update to keep their encyclopedia current. As a broad survey, this encyclopedia will provide a handy reference and an initial point of departure for many practitioners of medicine as well as office managers.
