Verapamil HCl is a calcium ion influx inhibitor (slow channel blocker or calcium ion antagonist). Verapamil is administered as a racemic mixture of the R and S enantiomers. Verapamil HCl is an almost white, crystalline powder, practically free of odor, with a bitter taste. It is soluble in water, chloroform, and methanol. Verapamil HCl is not chemically related to other cardioactive drugs.

It has the following molecular formula: C27H38N2O4HCl.

The molecular weight of verapamil HCl is 491.08.

Chemical name: Benzenacetonitrile, a-[3-[[2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)ethyl]methylamino]propyl]-3,4-dimethoxy-a-(1- methylethyl)monohydrochloride.

Verapamil HCl is Available in the Following Forms

Tablets: Calan is available for oral administration in film-coated tablets containing 40 mg, 80 mg, or 120 mg of verapamil HCl. Inactive Ingredients: Microcrystalline cellulose, corn starch, gelatin, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, iron oxide colorant, lactose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, talc, and titanium dioxide.

Capsules: Verapamil HCl is available for oral administration as a 240 mg hard gelatin capsule (dark blue cap/yellow body), a 180 mg hard gelatin capsule (light gray cap/yellow body), and a 120 mg hard gelatin capsule (yellow cap/yellow body). These pellet filled capsules provide a sustained-release of the drug in the gastrointestinal tract.

Sustained-Release/Extended-Release Tablets: The tablets are designed for sustained release of the drug in the gastrointestinal tract; sustained-release characteristics are not altered when the tablet is divided in half.

Sustained-Release Caplets: Calan SR is available for oral administration as light green, capsule-shaped, scored, film-coated tablets (caplets) containing 240 mg of verapamil HCl; as light pink, oval, scored, film-coated tablets (caplets) containing 180 mg of verapamil HCl; and as light violet, oval, film-coated tablets (caplets) containing 120 mg of verapamil HCl. The caplets are designed for sustained release of the drug in the gastrointestinal tract; sustained release characteristics are not altered when the caplet is divided in half. Inactive Ingredients: Alginate, carnauba wax, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl pyrcolidone, talc, titanium dioxide, and coloring agents; 240 mg: D&C yellow no. 10 lake and FD&C blue no. 2 lake; 120 and 180 mg: Iron oxide.

Extended-Release Capsules, Controlled-Onset: Verelan PM is available for oral administration as a 100 mg hard gelatin capsule (white opaque cap/amethyst body), a 200 mg hard gelatin capsule (amethyst opaque cap/amethyst body), and as a 300 mg hard gelatin capsule (lavender opaque cap/amethyst body). Inactive Ingredients: D&C red #28, FD&C blue #1, FD&C red #40, fumaric acid, gelatin, povidone, shellac, silicon dioxide, sodium lauryl sulfate, starch, sugar spheres, talc, and titanium dioxide.
